UNESCO – The Castles of Bellinzona
Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro comprise the imposing fortifications of Bellinzona. The only visible example of medieval defensive military architecture in the Alps, joined by a free-standing wall that once closed off the Ticino Valley between the Alps and Lake Maggiore, and ramparts that protected the town of Bellinzona which today, for the most part, still surround it. The tour explores centuries of history written by the Romans, the Lombards, the Milanese and the Swiss, and expands on the castles’ history in a territorial context from the Middle Ages to today. Brought to light are the complex international alliances and hostilities linked to the domination of this strategic territory which allowed Ticino to join the Swiss Confederation. Take a closer look at its architecture which evolved through the centuries as a direct result of historical events. The tour is suitable for those particularly interested in history and can be combined with a visit to the historical old town.
