Mesolcina and its Treasures
The tour starts at the castle of Mesocco, dating back to the High Middle Age. The main fortress in Canton Grigioni and one of the largest fortified complexes in Switzerland, the castle was expanded to an impregnable fortress, and today imposes itself on the narrow valley. We continue with a visit to the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria del Castello containing a major series of frescos dating from 1459-69. In the picturesque village of Soazza we find a noble mansion, houses typical of the region, the Capuchin Friars Hospice, a mill, and the wash houses where our grandmothers once did laundry. In an elevated position overlooking the village is the church of St. Martin.
