Mesolcina and its treasures

The tour begins at the early medieval Mesocco Castle. The main fortress of the Grisons and one of the largest fortified complexes in Switzerland, the castle was expanded to an impregnable fortress, and today it dominates the narrow valley. We continue with a visit to the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria del Castello, containing an important cycle of frescoes from 1459-69. In the picturesque village of Soazza we find a stately palace, typical houses of the region, the Hospice of the Capuchin Friars, a mill, and the wash houses where our grandmothers did their laundry. In an elevated position overlooking the village is the church of S. Martino.
