COMO ROMANESQUE (2 HOURS)

The precious 14th-century frescoes of the Basilica of S. Abbondio, the imposing Porta Torre, the ancient districts of the fortified city, the evocative Basilica of S. Fedele, the Civic Tower and the Broletto: these are some important vestiges of the Romanesque city.

The awakening of the city after the year 1000 is also evidenced by the numerous buildings of the Magistri Cumacini, such as the Romanesque basilicas of Via Regina, the ancient access road to the city, and of Como: S. Abbondio, simple, balanced and elegant, embellished with an extraordinary cycle of 14th-century frescoes; S. Fedele, in the pulsating heart of the city, with unusual and original architecture; San Giacomo, longer until 1500 with six naves. On three sides of the castrum rise the beautiful stone walls of Moltrasio, as well as the imposing Porta Torre, access to the city. In the squares, trade and business are conducted, the trade districts arise and further north, next to each other, the civil and religious power, the Broletto with the Civic Tower and the ancient cathedral of S. Maria Maggiore.
