UNESCO – The castles of Bellinzona

Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro make up the imposing fortified complex of Bellinzona. The only visible example of medieval military defensive architecture in the Alps, it is joined by a wall that once closed the Ticino valley between the Alps and Lake Maggiore, and by bastions that protected the town of Bellinzona and that still largely surround it today. The guided tour delves into centuries of history written by the Romans, Lombards, Milanese and Swiss, expanding the territorial context linked to the castles from the Middle Ages to today. It will make you understand the complex international alliances, and the hostilities for the predominance of a strategic territory, which allowed Ticino to enter the Swiss Confederation. A closer look is directed at the architecture, which has evolved over the centuries and is a direct reflection of historical events. The tour is suitable for those particularly interested in History and can be combined with a visit to the historic center.
